Watts’s Leicester: Factories and Workshops

Industry in Watt’s time was widely dispersed throughout the town.  Boot and Shoe work had begun at the end of the C16th and framework-knitting hosiery at the beginning of the C17th, but machinery was hand powered, in domestic houses or, increasingly, in distinctive small two-storey workshops; the frames were on the top floor, illuminated by a long window for maximum light.
